Active–passive mixtures with bulk loading: a minimal active engine in one dimension

Abstract We study a one-dimensional mixture of active (run-and-tumble) particles and passive (Brownian) particles, with single-file constraint, in sawtooth potential. The experience ratchet effect this generates current, which can push against an applied load. resulting system operates as engine. Using numerical simulations, we analyse the efficiency engine discuss how it be optimised. Efficient operation occurs when self-organise into teams, ones large loads by leveraging collective behaviour. particle arrangement, conserved under affects efficiency. also show that relaxing constraint still allows to operate effectively.
